In March 2016, the partners of The World Cetacean Alliance, together with a powerful front of 75 large organisations, businesses, individuals and grass roots advocates, spear headed by campaigns chair Sharyn Taylor, sent a letter to Village Roadshow Ltd. (VRL) owners of Sea World on the Gold Coast.
In one united voice we wrote regarding the future overseas development plans of the Australian company encouraging a policy that seeks to phase out the inclusion of captive cetaceans within both current and future marine parks. We asked that VRL look at a revision of their operations and take a more sustainable and responsible approach, be leaders in a highly competitive market and not include cetaceans in future developments, thus encouraging the same of other marine parks.
We are pleased to inform that we received a response from the Director of Marine Science & Wildlife at Sea World, in which he confirmed VRL’s commitment (announced in November 2015) to not source cetaceans from the wild. The response went on to explain that Sea World is committed to listening to the changing views of the community. It also demonstrated a refreshing willingness from the Director to continue dialogue and welcomed the opportunity to work with the WCA.
We would like to thank everyone who signed on to our letter and will do our best to keep you informed as we move forward.
